Technology And 'Social Media' Paradox

More than a year ago, I was having lunch with a friend at a restaurant, when we suddenly engaged on a casual conversation with our server about how social media and smart phones impact personal relationships. The wise lady told us 'technology and social media may make people grow apart, but they also make people that live far away get much closer.'

So, here I was, Saturday afternoon, hanging out at my Miami apartment, watching El Clásico (Real Madrid vs. F.C. Barcelona) while chatting with my Bonn-based boyfriend on the computer and my Roma-based boss through Blackberry messenger. After the game, I called my dad in Spain to congratulate him for the Merengue victory. Yay!

And at the end of the day, it's all about making sure you spend time with the people you love!

How technology and social media have impacted your personal relationships? Do you have a story you want to share?

  2. You have to know when to use it and when to put it aside. At least that's my belief...it would never replace human interaction.

  3. Such true words- living miles and miles from home, I don't know what I would do without facebook and Skype!

  4. I definitely agree with that. As long as you make time for your loved ones that are close, it's all good. This world has become so much smaller, hasn't it? :)

  5. I agree with these ladies! Its both good and also distracting at times :) I try to put down my computer and phone by a certain hour each evening, so that quality time is being spent conversing, playing games, reading...anything but in front of a screen!
