What These Olympic Games Reminded Me About Social Media...And Life

Back in school, I wasn't good at sports. I hope Lucía takes on her father's physical attributes :) But the greatness of sports goes well beyond physical strength.

What I like the most about top-level sports is the philosophy towards competition. The greatest athletes and coaches of all time preach how we should focus all our energy on training our winning mentality and our performance, rather than seeing what or how other people are doing.

These principles reasonate with me, especially in the context of the so-called social media comparison trap. In a world ruled by picture-perfect feeds, it's never been easier to fall into that. Full disclosure: I love INSTAGRAM. I love to indulge on Gwyneth's or Emily's feeds AND I don't see myself quitting these habits any time soon. The problem might come when we lose perspective of our own life, achievements, goals...It's not about the time we waste, but also about the energy! I have been there.

With the Summer Olympics in full swing, I'm amazed about the stories behind these wonderful athletes, from Simone Biles, to Andreas Toba. They are super heroes. And beyond their natural talent, hard work and discipline, there's also powerful  mental strength,

In the spirit of healthy competition, motivation and personal growth, I rounded up a shortlist of powerful quotes coming from some of the greatest athletes and coaches of all times. At the end of the day, we all have our own Olympics going, am I right? Enjoy!

I always felt that my greatest asset was not my physical ability, it was my mental ability

I've got a theory that if you give 100% all of the time, somehow will work out in the end

I hated every minute of training, but I said 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.

Some people say I have attitude -maybe I do...but I think you have to. You have to believe in yourself when no one else does. That makes you a winner right there.

  1. Great post. It has been so cool to watch Phelps. He's such an amazing athlete but social media has really had a hay day with his game face. Poor guy!
