Five Must-See Spots: Florida Keys

Key West will always be a happy place for me. Some of the best memories I keep from my years in Miami took place in the Florida Keys: Christmas with the family, getaways with the girlfriends or romantic trips with Michael. On the next installment of the 'five must-see spots' series, I'm breaking down my favorite things to do in the area:

Whoever came up with the  'it's not the destination, but the journey' concept could very well have had this stretch of the US1 on mind. Entering into the Monroe County from Dade County is just magic and the drive from Key Largo to Mile Marker 0 is nothing short of breathtaking. If you drive all the way to Key West, I'd recommend to make a stop in Islamorada or Marathon to enjoy the view and the ocean breeze.

Key West sunsets are an attraction on their own right and definitely live up to their reputation. There's a daily Sunset festival on Mallorly Square, with live music and acrobatic shows. It is a great option to stop by before heading to dinner. A more intimate option is Fort Zachary Taylor Historic National Park, which has a pretty nice beach. There are also sunset sailing cruises. I've never tried, but it sounds amazing!

We discovered Better than Sex during a getaway with my friends. Behind this catchy name, there's a great restaurant offering the most decadent and indulging desserts. Michael and I went there on our last trip to Key West, in Thanksgiving 2012. We got to talk to Dani, the owner. We told her I would be moving to Germany the following month. She treated us with two glasses of champagne and wished us good luck on our new adventure. How's that for classy?

I think this is the best way to explore Key West! It's so much fun and also convenient. Roll through Duval St., the Sea Port, the Southernmost Point or stop by Ernest Hemingway house (the inside is beautiful!) It's really safe too.

My friends and I did the Ultimate Adventure experience with Fury in 2011 (Memorial Day Weekend) and I still remember how much fun it was. We did jet ski and parasailing, got into the ocean...it was a perfect day. I couldn't recommend it more.

Here you have personal pics of my trips to KW over the past years:

So, I'm curious? Have you been to Key West? Any other suggestions? I'd love to hear.

Thanks for reading.
